Project overview

Popcore is a small studio based in Berlin, Germany specialising in hyper-casual games for mobile devices.

This project was submitted to Popcore as part of a design challenge for a UX/UI designer position.

I was tasked with the following:

  • Review the overall user experience and create a new user flow that improves upon the what is existing.

  • Propose an new UI design by updating a few key screens.

User story

After spending some time playing “Pull The Pin” and the wider suite of Popcore games, I noticed that it was difficult to track your progress towards rewards.

I created the user story below to reflect this:

As a user, I want to be rewarded for progression, so that I can customise my visual experience”

Wireframing & prototyping

I then created an improved user flow detailing the updated user journey, this was then translated into the wireframes above.

The overall experience is improved as the user is able to track their progress with a bar that is present as they play.

UI design update

When updating the UI for “Pull The Pin” I focused on making it more engaging, while keeping consistent the overall style of Popcore games.

The UI elements feature drop shadow to emphasise the idea of height and gravity that is a feature of gameplay. I went for a minimal yet playful style that feels softer and rounded, matching the feel of the 3D objects used in the game.

Your in-game currency is displayed at the top right of every screen, encouraging the user to progress. By pressing this the user is able to access the “Shop” where they are able to equip skins and upgrade their town. In the “Skins” screen I reorganised the unlock requirements, making this easier to understand for the user.

The screens below demonstrate the original screens and my proposed changes.
